Vengono riconosciuti in essi i protagonisti della prima tetrarchia, istituita nel 293 da Diocleziano  I tetrarchi Il gruppo scultoreo in porfido rosso, collocato all'esterno della basilica, risale al III sec. e raffigura i primi quattro tetrarchi. Venne portato a Venezia da  Il Ritratto dei quattro tetrarchi è un gruppo scultoreo in porfido di quattro imperatori romani risalente al 300 d.C.
